Sumatran lowland rain forests.
In a similar vein - and even more concerning - is the destruction of the Sumatran lowland rain forests, as reported by the Encyclopedia of the Earth (using World Wildlife Fund information):
“The Malayan tapir is the largest of the four living tapir species and the only Old World representative. The Sumatran population of the Malayan tapir is close to extinction, with no more than fifty animals left in the wild.”
Fifty. That’s less than the zoo holdings of Malayan Tapirs worldwide. In their native range.
Also at risk are the Sumatran rhinoceros, Sumatran Tiger, Asian Elephant, and Orangutan.
